23 Last year, Geneva Rock started a scholarship essay contest for students who are preparing themselves for careers in construction-related fields at accredited universities, colleges, trade schools, and vocational schools. Applicants write an essay answering four questions and the winner is given a $2,000 award. First-rate Leadership According to Jay Ritchie, Carl Clyde, Nathan Schellenberg, and Shane Albrecht, all of whomare vice presidents at Geneva Rock, part of the reason Geneva Rock has been successful is because of the work of its current CEO, JimGolding. Jimwas named the 2019 CEO of the year by Utah Business Magazine inMarch 2019. He is a friendly, approachableman who has hired, and retained, high-quality people because he values everyone’s ideas and opinions. He has also encouraged those who work at Geneva Rock, including the Associated General Contractors, to become involved in service projects for the community and industry organizations. Jim is a forward-thinking leader who has been a powerful influence at Geneva Rock for 35 years. His involvement with Geneva Rock’s major projects has shaped Utah’s landscape. He has been involved with the ACG of Utah and UDOT and has championed improvements that protect the environment inside the company and out. At Geneva Rock, he has lowered emissions and reduced the environmental impact of projects by investingmore than $30million. Among other efforts, the money was spent on the following: • A fleet of natural gas concrete mixers • A conveyor belt designed to generate energy and reduce emissions and dust • A zero-waste facility that recycles the water used during aggregate production and dust mitigation Jim also acquired new gravel reserves and two new hot plants for the company. Under Jim’s direction, Geneva Rock has gotten into some interesting, previously untapped markets and new business efforts: • Concrete paving • Micro-surfacing • Chip sealing • Bonded wearing course paving
