26 T his UDOT federal project involved placing 14,415 tons of asphalt that had a 2” mill and fill with tapered edges. We constructed 49 pedestrian access ramps and 149 utility reconstructs with a rapid set mix design. The work involved removal and replacement of the curb, gutter, and sections of the side- walk throughout the project. The work window for paving operations was difficult. The 5400 South corridor experiences high daily vehicle counts, which required an extensive amount of traffic control to be placed and removed each night before and after paving. During weeknights, after set up and tear down of traffic control, our paving shift was only about 6 hours, whereas a regular paving shift is 8-10 hours. The short shift length added to the complexity of the project and required extra coordination and scheduling efforts on behalf of the management team. Additionally, 5400 South uses the “Flex Lanes” configuration, which complicated switching and maneuvering traffic to coincide with the current configuration. The flex lanes required additional forethought to complete the project since there was no time eastbound lanes could be in the furthest westbound lanes and vice versa. Paving was challenging because 5400 South has had so many prior reconstructs and widenings before this project. The adjacent tie ins for cross streets and exist- ing curb and gutter created other opportunities for our paving crew to make the best out of a difficult project, which they succeeded in doing. The project was completed on time despite a wet May 2019, and holidays in the middle of the paving schedule — the Fourth of July, Taylorsville Dayzz, and Pioneer Day. Finally, the project achieved a combined incentive bonus of 98.1% for gradation, oil content and density. The percentages of available bonus that we earned were 97.7% for gradation/AC content and 98.4% for material density. There were zero recordable injuries on the project and at the asphalt plant. Daily Take-5 meetings before each shift helped us with our safety record. The foreman outlined specific work tasks and potential safety issues that might be encoun- tered. Also, we coordinated with our public involvement staff as much as possible to keep the traveling public informed about the construction as it progressed. 3 PROJECT LOCATION: Taylorsville Utah, 5400 South from Bangerter Highway to 1500 West PROJECT START: May 2019 PROJECT COMPLETION: August 2019 SR-173; BANGERTER HIGHWAY TO 1500 WEST SMALL PROJECT AWARD WINNER: GRANITE CONSTRUCTION 26
