24 T he project award amount was $2,204,448. Geneva Rock placed 15,369 tons of asphalt. Geneva Rock removed existing asphalt and replaced it with 2” of new HMA (over 2.25 miles of roadway in downtown Logan, Utah). In addition to paving, over 200 utilities within the roadway were reconstructed and modernized. Maintenance of a traffic control plan was also included throughout the project, and 500 gallons of pavement marking paint, thermoplastic messages and stop bars were used. Lastly, 121,692 SY of 3” rototilling was done, and more than 15,300 tons of new HMA was placed. This was a challenging and exciting project for Geneva Rock. Logan’s Main Street is known for its consistent heavy traffic through downtown, and this project was right in busiest part. Keeping traffic control set up and maintained on this job required a consistent team effort to ensure that crews had an adequate and safe work zone, as well as maintaining the safety and flow of the traveling public. Another challenge for this project was the tight schedule to perform our work. Geneva had an average work window of nine hours each night to perform our work while maintaining at least one lane of traffic in each direction. Because of the narrow timeframe to work, Geneva Rock was able to team up with LeGrand Johnson and purchase HMA from their hot plant just outside the project limits. This allowed us to have fewer trucks on the road and cut HMA haul times in half, allowing us to better respond and limit impact to unforeseen issues encoun- tered on the project. Another unique aspect of this particular project was the fact that we couldn’t use vibratory rollers for our paving installation, due to con- cerns from UDOT and Logan City regarding the extremely old and fragile water main that runs down the length of the roadway. Geneva Rock was able to main- tain the required 92.5% density requirement through the use of oscillating rollers to achieve compaction. Through this process, we had very little impact on the waterline that was of concern. Geneva Rock worked closely with Logan City to ensure all utilities within the roadway were accessible and restored to working order upon completion of this project. This project was a perfect example of how Geneva Rock is truly committed to building a better community. As an asphalt subcontractor, quality means everything to the general contractor and owner. We spent significant time working through lifts and widths of asphalt so that it wouldn’t affect smoothness. Compaction is the leading factor when determining pavement durability and longevity. Geneva Rock achieved 59% of the available incentive for compaction on this project. ZERO is a highlight for the teamworking on the Logan Main Street job. We’re proud to report that no recordable injuries occurred — making all OSHA Recordable Rates and Numbers 0.00 with 4,637.30 hours worked by Geneva Rock employees. PROJECT LOCATION: Logan PROJECT START: July 2019 PROJECT COMPLETION: August 2019 US-91; SR-165 TO 10TH NORTH (LOGAN MAIN STREET) This didn’t just happen! Our safety team and project teamworked tirelessly to ensure a safe working environment for everyone involved. Anexampleof their diligent effortwas holding daily safety meetings. At these safety meet- ings, the tasks required that day were dis- cussed, and safety concerns were addressed so that everyone was aware and confident about their assignments. At Geneva Rock, the safety of our employees, other contrac- tors, and the public is our top priority. 3 SMALL PROJECT AWARD NOMINEE: GENEVA ROCK PRODUCTS
