22 HALES SAND & GRAVEL F airview Canyon had a mandatory start date of June 6, and Hales started on June 10. The project bid amount was $2,937,643. The scope of work on the project consisted of two deep-spot excavation spots, three pedestrian ramps, 90,546 LF of UTBC shouldering, 6,461 tons of 3/8” HMA lane level, 12,132 FDR ½” HMA and 150,084 SY of type C chip seal. The project began at the Interchange of US-89 and SR-31, in Fairview Utah, and then went to the top of Fairview Canyon. The project started with two deep excavation spots; these spots were areas where the road had settled and had to be excavated out, three feet deep, and built back. Our subcontractor installed cross culverts to help drain areas that had natural springs. The natural springs were causing road issues due to water sitting against the road. Hales shouldered the entire length of the project with UTBC to create a wider road-plate form. Hales then lane leveled the project. SR-31 is a very steep, narrow road. Hales decided to haul asphalt from their hot plant in Centerfield to Fairview with double belly dumps, then reload the asphalt into single dump trucks. This process made it safer for the truck driver to haul up and down an 8% grade. It also provided safer conditions for the traveling public passing by the paving crew in the narrow canyon. After installing the lane, Hales installed a 1 ½” overlay with fiber-reinforced HMA. During the final process, Hales chip-sealed the entire road section with a type three chip. The overall project was a great improvement for SR-31. It widened a road section, corrected two settling issues, and provided a smoother road service that the trav- eling public will enjoy for years to come. During the project, safety was our first priority for both the traveling public and the construction crews who performed the work each day. Throughout the project, multiple crews were working in congested areas, and traffic ran close to the work zone. We took all the necessary steps to keep everyone safe until the project was complete. The project was completed without injuries to construction crews or the traveling public. 3 PROJECT LOCATION: Fairview PROJECT START: June 2019 PROJECT COMPLETION: November 2019 SR-31 FAIRVIEW CANYON LARGE PROJECT AWARD NOMINEE:
