In addition to his environmental efforts, he has also supported education, youth organizations that include youth sports teams, and has provided help for many others in the community. Looking toward the future, Jay Ritchie was recently named as executive vice president of Geneva Rock. He is already responsible for overseeing the company’s concrete business, a job that involves several concrete divisions and plants within the state. New responsibilities will include corporate administrative functions and specialty construction and area construction divisions. Scholarships Last year, Geneva Rock started a scholarship essay contest for students who are preparing themselves for careers in construction-related fields at accredited universities, colleges, trade schools, and vocational schools. Applicants write an essay answering four questions and the winner is given a $2,000 award. Awards are issued in the fall and in the spring, and there have been three awards granted since the program began. The winner of the spring award was Ryan Green, a student at M-Tech in Spanish Fork who is studying diesel technology. In addition to receiving the scholarship, Geneva Rock also gave him a job. The next award will be announced in August 2019. Awards Awards demonstrate professional credibility. Geneva Rock and one of its employees, Waylund Ludlow, have been honored as follows. Utah Chapter for the American Concrete Institute (ACI) The Utah Chapter for the American Concrete Institute recently awarded Excellence in Concrete awards for the following projects: • Garff Executive Business Education Building (Pavement and Flatworks: Sitework) • Hale Centre Theatre (Commercial Structures) • Midvale Middle School (Pavement and Flatworks: Sitework) • Prestige Financial Services (Precast/ Tilt-up Structures) • Provo Airport Apron and Taxilanes 1 and 2 (Pavement and Flatwork: Airports/Highways) • Red Barn Substance Abuse Group Living (Residential Structures) The ACI also gave an excellence in paving award to Geneva Rock for its work on a project involving Redwood Road and Bangerter to 12600 South. Utah Asphalt Pavement Association (UAPA) Waylund Ludlow is an area manager (asphalt) at Geneva Rock who has also been involved with UAPA. That organization gave him an industry leader award for his work. UAPA praised his “commitment and leadership to industry, to the UAPA, to [himself ], and to the community.” Association of General Contractors (AGC) The AGC gave an award to Geneva Rock for its work on the project to dredge the marina at Utah Lake State Park. 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_ continue=1&v=V1KXTFFyEv8
