That figure equates to more than one football field’s length (105 yards) of buried utilities for every man, woman and child in the United States. Blue Stakes of Utah 811was estab- lished in1974andchargedwith the purpose of reducing damages to underground facilities and ensur- ing public safety. Blue Stakes of Utah 811 is a nonprofit, comprised of utility company members. The goal of Blue Stakes of Utah 811 is to educate and connect res- idents and businesses with utility companies to prevent damages, that may cause emergencies. It is a free service and it is also the law. After you call 811, the utility owners or another third party locate company will arrive to mark where your utilities are with paint and flags so that you do not damage them while digging. There is a 24-inch safety zone on each side of the marks which will need to be avoided during any excavation. Call at least 2 full business days prior to starting your excava- tion project. Statistics show that there is a less than 1% chance of damage if a locate request is created.
