GET TING TO KNOW OUTGOING PRESIDENT, WAYLUND LUDLOW Waylund Ludlow Outgoing President The Utah Asphalt Pavement Association Howdidyoubecome involved in the asphalt pavement industry? I’ve always hadapassion for construction. My family owned a concrete company inNephi, so I grew up around construction. Describe your education back- ground. What did you study? I graduated with a civil engineer degree from BYU in 2000, and went to work for an engineering company in American Fork, handling project management. I have my P.E. license. In fact, that’s how I met the leaders of Geneva Rock. They were the contractor on a job I was involved in. I was impressed with their integrity through- out the process of that job. When they had an opening in 2004, they offered me the job. Arethereanyspecific individuals that hadamajor impact onyour career? Yes, Al Schellenberg, the past president of Geneva Rock. He is the epitome of integ- rity. He truly walks his talk. He valued his people, andwe all knew it. I think it inspired us to do our best work. He did what he said he was going to do. I also believe that trait rubbed off on his successor, Jim Golding, our current president. What is themost rewardingpart of your career? Seeing a project come to fruition. When it all comes together, and I can take a step back and say, “we built that.” It’s a tremen- dous feeling. Whatdoyouthinkwillbesomeof the dominant trends within the industry in the next 5-10 years? Qualityand innovation. I think that innovation is going to be at the forefront of the indus- try, and right behind it will be the expecta- tion of quality materials. I think it’s a natural evolution to get better at what we do. What is the most important aspect of being a member of UAPA for you? There is a definite benefit for any industry – ours included – to have that unified voice. Which is what our mission statement says: “The Utah Asphalt Pavement Association (UAPA) is committed to being the unified voice of the asphalt industry to promote the qualityanduseof asphalt pavements inUtah.” I truly believe that when we come together as an industry, we amplify the best of the collective, andwe all benefit. As an industry we are more educated, more professional, and I think we all see more business as a result. The association lets us take a step back, and as a board and organization, we can work “on” the industry, as well as “in” the industry. Did you have past experiences that helped your leadership in UAPA? I’vebeenfortunateinmycareer.I’vehadbosses that allowed me to succeed and fail because theydidn’tdictatehow, rather, theyhelpedme understand their vision of the end result and offered guidance along the way. As a result, I’m comfortable taking the shot, so to speak. I truly believe that when we come together as an industry, we amplify the best of the collective, and we all benefit. 4
