O ld Highway 91 was an ideal project. The job went exactly as planned, with the exception of a couple minor design flaws. Since the job was a federal aid project, UDOT managed it and Juab County was involved to some extent. Jones and DeMille Engineeringwere theconsultants on this job and ran it for UDOT. The partnership between Jones and DeMille, Geneva Rock P r odu c t s , and J uab Coun t y wa s constructive and mutually beneficial. The project was a full-depth reconstruct with a few storm drain crossings. An old concrete-paved road was underneath the project and, as planned, we encountered and removed about 500SY of the concrete. Below is a list of the quantities: • Roadway Excavation 9,358 CY • Granular Barrow 8,816 CY • Untreated Base Course 7,311 CY • ½”UDOT HMA 10,100 Tons The asphalt was hauled fromGeneva Rock’s Point of the Mountain Plant to the site in which shuttlebuggies transferred themix to the asphalt paver. The project was paved in three, two-inch liftswitha½-inchUDOTmix. This project is unique for several reasons. The first being that the project was to be paved in three, two-inch liftswith a nominal maximumaggregate size (NMAS) of ½-inch. Despite the challenges faced here, Geneva Rock successfully paved the required thick- ness and maintained structural integrity of the mix, as well as made a very smooth surface, receiving over $13,000 in smooth- ness incentives. This projectwas alsounique because Geneva Rock Products was able to partner with its sister company Sunroc and use their gravel pit which was basically on site. Some of the many benefits of having such a close source includes: lower emis- sions, less truck traffic, lower cost to tax payers, less fuel consumption, and safety. Safety Record on the Project Safety is our biggest concern at Geneva Rock Products. We strive to make a safe workplace throughout the company in ever y task we do. Although this project didn’t have many risky activ- ities, a safety plan was still formu- lated and implemented ever y day. Having the right people in the right place is always key in the success of ever y project, and this project was no exception. Tim Bird, the general foreman on this project, has his OSHA 30 required training and performed daily safety checks. Tim also has his UDOT traffic control certification and was able to perform 4 traffic control checks per day. Kyle Stradling, our safety representative on this project, did monthly safety checks to ensure the safety of our crews and the public. These factors helped the job to be successful in having zero incidents. Project Quality The project had 3.25 total lane miles. One aspect the owner was very concerned about was the smoothness of the finished product. We took this concern very seri- ously and did everything in our power to achieve perfect smoothness. Aside from the start and finish of this project, the only area that required grinding came down to a total of 29.33 square yards. With such impressive smooth- ness, we were able to earn a smoothness bonus of $13,250. Density was not easily achieved due to the aggregate size on such a thin lift. However, Geneva Rock was able to overcome this by hitting the paved area with two large rollers and one lightweight single drum follow- ing behind. Although we faced various complications in our day-to-day work, the overall outcome of this project was a huge success! 3 OLD HIGHWAY 91- “Small Asphalt Project of the Year” PHASE IV 29
